The holiday of Passover (Pesach) main objective is to celebrate and commemoratethe history of our forefathers in Egypt. Thus, a major focus of the Hagaddah is the retelling of the story of the trials and tribulations of our people in Egypt and their eventual Exodus from the country which enslaved them for hundreds of years.

The most famous utterance is Moses' recurring plea beseeching the Pharaoh to "Let My People Go," and the Egyptian Ruler's reluctance and denial of the request, despite the devastating plagues that befell his land, a stubbornness eventually broken by the tenth of the Ten Plagues, Death of the Firstborn (מַכַּת בְּכוֹרוֹת): Ex. 11:1–12:36.

The Book of Exodus, Shmot, in Chapters 7-12 recounts The Ten Plagues (Hebrew: עשרת המכות, Aseret Ha-Makot), also referred to a the Plagues of Egypt (Hebrew: מכות מצרים, Makot Mitzrayim), the ten calamities imposed by G-d on the Egyptians as a means to convince Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go.

The story of the Plagues, follows the an account of the difficult life of the People of Israel in Egypt, following the death of Joseph the son of Jacob, and concludes with the redemption of the Israelites and the exodus of the nation.
